Synopsis:

The story follows KEIRA WEIR (16), an academically proficient teen, who has just moved to Chippewa, Michigan with her mother LINDSAY WEIR (44), an alum of McKinley high and a member of the freaks in her youth. Lindsay is just getting out of a divorce and wants to get a fresh start back in her hometown where she will be around her friends and family again. Keira is sad to move but is excited to be closer to her childhood best friend Sil Kelly. Sil is the daughter of Kim Kelly, Lindsay’s best friend since high school. 

It is the first day of school and Sil is ecstatic to introduce Keira to her friends who are referred to as the freaks. The freaks decide to welcome Keria by inviting her to MATT’s fathers club on Friday night to see a concert. 

Meanwhile, the geeks of the school Sil’s younger brother KEVIN (14) and his best friends are late to get their school ID photos taken. Kevin trips over a camera, embarrassing himself in front of his crush Tommy. 

While their kids are at school, Lindsay and Kim reconnect and Kim tells Lindsay that she needs to get back into the dating scene. Soon after she meets a man and they make plans to go to a concert together on Friday night. On the night of the concert, Lindsay’s date picks her up and they head to Slush, a local 21+ bar downtown. Also on their way to the club is the freaks with Keira. The freaks get high and go through the back door of the club courtesy of Matt whose father owns it, and grab beers from the backroom as they come in. 

While Lindsay and her date are at a table, the manager comes over to see how they are doing. Lindsay is shocked to see her highschool boyfriend Nick is the manager of the club. 

Meanwhile, Keira, now cross faded, gets up to go to the bathroom and spots her mom at a table. Keira spends the rest of the night hiding from her mother all while building a bond with the freaks. At the end of the night, Lindsay walks outside to see Keira making out with Matt in a group of pot smokers. She is stunned to see her daughter with this crowd and pulls her away to go home. 

The next day at school, the geek squad talk about having a game night and Kevin plans how is going to invite Tommy. Simultaneously, the freaks plan for their next friday night excursion- a party also happening at the Kelly household. 

On Friday night, Kim, Lindsay and Nick reunite and go out for drinks while Keira is at home grounded.

At the Kelly household, Sil confronts Kevin as she sees him setting up his Nintendo Switch to the tv. She tells him about her party and Kevin is angry at her for ruining his plans. As the night goes on, more and more people show up and it gets out of control. Tommy, who plays a couple rounds of Mario Kart with the geeks gets bored and goes downstairs to join the rest of the party, leaving Kevin heartbroken and even angrier at Sil. 

While Keira is unpacking boxes, she comes across an old memory box of her mothers that contains pictures of her in high school. She discovers that her mother was part of a group like the freaks and is mad that she is now punishing her for it. She grabs a green jacket from the box, her mother’s iconic one from high school, and heads out to Sil’s house. 

Nick, Kim and Lindsay all head back to Kim’s house. Expecting to come home to a few geeks playing video games, Kim is shocked to see a massive house party happening in her home. Upon opening the door, Lindsay spots Keira once again in the arms of Matt and freaks out at her. Nick stops their argument telling Lindsay that Matt is his son. The party gets shut down and Lindsay sits down with Keira outside and opens up about her youth and how she doesn’t want Keira to make the same mistakes that she did. 

On Monday, Tommy passes Kevin in the hallway and apologizes for leaving their game session the other night. He offers to make it up to him by inviting him over after school. Keira who is now officially a member of the freaks starts a real relationship with Matt who her mother finally approves of. Lindsay and Kim head to Nick’s club, where they meet up with him and talk about how their kids ended up just like them.
